May is Mental Health Month: Connect to Low-Cost, Peer-Based Mental Health Services

CHICAGO – April 20, 2010
– Loss of health care coverage due to employer cutbacks or layoffs impacts those living with mental and behavioral health concerns.  In recognition of Mental Health Month this May, Abraham Low Self-Help Systems invites anyone dealing with stress, anxiety, fatigue, anger management issues or any other mental or behavioral health concerns to our Recovery International and RI Discovery community, telephone and online chat peer-to-peer groups.

There is no required fee to attend our groups, making them a necessity in these trying economic times.

Recovery International and RI Discovery groups provide a safe, confidential place to talk about life’s challenges and receive support for self-help efforts. In our groups, people train one another on the use of the cognitive-behavioral training system developed by neuropsychiatrist Abraham Low, MD. These cognitive-behavioral techniques are a simple set of living skills used to change negative thoughts and behaviors; changes in negative attitudes and beliefs follow.

Our peer-to-peer groups and self-help training system have been empowering people to lead peaceful, productive lives for nearly 75 years. To find a group in your area, connect to a telephone or online chat group, or learn about our self-help tools and how they change lives for the better, visit or call 866-221-0302.

Abraham Low Self-Help Systems Releases Power Tools Cards

CHICAGO - April 20, 2010 - Abraham Low Self-Help Systems announces the release of Power Tools cards, its latest product to support faster learning of the organization's self-help tools. Each set of Power Tools consists of 45 of Abraham Low's cognitive-behavioral concepts, or "tools," with an explanation of each on the back of the cards.

If you are new to our self-help groups and system, these cards are ideal for you to more quickly learn our self-help techniques. They are also a great way for people who have been involved for some time to easily explain the "tools" to people who are new to the system.

Example Power Tools cards include:

 * We can't change an event, we can only change our attitude toward it.
Definition: You can't change what happened, but you can change your attitude about it.

 * There are no uncontrollable impulses, only impulses that are uncontrolled.
Definition: We can control our impulses or our muscles, if we choose to.

 * Fearful anticipation is often worse than the reaction.
Definition: Worrying about what could be is often worse than what is.

Each set is only $30 and can be ordered at or by calling toll free 866-221-0302.

As you may recall, our first touch with Recovery International occurred in late 2005 when two Oregon State Hospital (OSH) residents asked Debra Lamp, OSH mental health specialist, to take them to a Recovery International group meeting in Salem. Word spread as people began to learn and use the Recovery International self-help system and saw how they increased their ability to deal appropriately with anger and fears, to interact more positively with peers and staff, and to lead more peaceful, calm and productive daily lives.
