The Power to Change for Corrections/Judicial System
The Power to Change is a peer-to-peer cognitive restructuring program where inmates, court-ordered individuals, those on probation and those graduating from a correctional program learn impulse control and how to manage anger, anxiety and moods in peer-to-peer self-help support groups. The program is based on the cognitive restructuring training system developed by neuropsychiatrist Abraham Low, MD.
During each program individuals learn to take control of their lives instead of being victims of events or the behavior of others.
The Power to Change’s cognitive restructuring program fosters self-restraint, impulse control, attitude adjustment, antisocial impulse reduction and emotional stabilization of correctional facility and judicial system populations. Because participants learn behavioral rehabilitation and anger management tools, correctional facilities will see a reduction in violence and improvement in interactions with inmates and corrections staff and the judicial system will see a reduction in recidivism.
Beyond its subtitle, The Power to Change is a life skills program. Participants learn to take control of their lives, rather than be victims of events or of other people’s behavior. The underlying premise is that while individuals have little control over the events or people around them, they can control their own thoughts and impulses. Through ongoing training and practice, they form new cognitive and behavioral habits that help them gain mastery over their anger and moods.
